Louis Leithold (1925-2005), author and professor, once owned the Kiva Movie Theatre in Scottsdale, Arizona. In later years he founded and ran the Cinema Poster Gallery, selling vintage Hollywood posters to some of the best-known collectors in the country. This was one of the finest single-owner poster sales to come to auction in recent history.
Louis favored the smart comedies of Preston Sturges and the dark, edgy noir films of the 1940’s and 1950’s. He also had a stupendous collection of Hitchcock film posters, fine copies of gritty western posters like The Searchers and My Darling Clementine, and pristine examples pf some of the great French New Wave films of the 1950’s and 1960’s. As if to balance out the darker films, Louis’ inventory also featured plenty of lighter fare: musicals, comedies, and the sexy posters of Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot. Almost every great film star of the 20th century is represented in Louis’ collection, including Clarke Gable, Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis, Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow, Gary Cooper, Katharine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, John Wayne, Mae West, Rita Hayworth, James Dean, Ingrid Bergman, Judy Garland, James Stewart, Fred Astaire, James Cagney, Henry Fonda, Spencer Tracey, Charlie Chaplin, Joan Crawford….and many, many more.
